クロード・ベルナールの名言
フランスの生理学者。ブドウ商の家に生まれ、リヨン大学に学ぶ。劇作家を志しパリに出たが、評論家S.M.ジラルダンに諭され、医学の道に進む。研究業績を上げ、ソルボンヌ大学、コレージュ・ド・フランスの教授を歴任、アカデミー・フランセーズ会員に選出された。生理学は物理学・化学に立脚すべきことなどを説き、現在の生理学、医学の礎を築いたとされる。彼の「生体の内部環境は外部から独立している」とする「内部環境の固定性」の概念は、後にウォルター・B・キャノンによって「ホメオスタシス（恒常性）」と名付けられ、広く知られるところとなった。著書に『実験医学序説』がある。
