アメリカ合衆国の社会学者。ダニエル・ボロツキーとしてニューヨークに生まれ、後にダニエル・ベルを名乗る。青年期には、共産主義に惹かれるも、スターリン体制下の実態に幻滅。フォーチュン誌などの編集に携わり、その後、コロンビア大学教授、ハーバード大学教授を歴任。マルクス主義的な階級闘争の「イデオロギーの終焉」と、高度情報サービスへの経済活動への移行による「脱工業社会」を唱える。著書は、『資本主義の文化的矛盾』『20世紀文化の散歩道』『社会科学の現在』『21世紀への予感―現代の問題を未来の視点から読む』『知識社会の衝撃』『最後に残る智恵 テクノロジーと人類社会のゆくえ』等。
