イタリアの詩人、作家、哲学者。イタリア文学最大の詩人とされ、後のルネサンス文化に多大な影響を与えた。9歳のときに出会い見初めて、後にその死によって大きな衝撃を受けた少女ベアトリーチェへの精神的愛を、終生の創作の源泉とした。死の直前まで掛かり完成させた叙事詩の大作『神曲』は、中世のカトリック的世界観・人生観の芸術的集大成と言える。著書は他に『新生』『饗宴』等。
