アメリカの作家。ニューヨークにて裕福な家庭に生まれ、士官学校で学んだ後、演劇へ傾倒。俳優や脚本家として活動するも大成せず、雑貨店主、新聞編集者などを経て、作家として子供向けの小説を書いて成功を収めた。代表作『オズの魔法使い』は大ベストセラーとなり舞台化、またハリウッドで映画化もされており、そのシリーズは１４作を数える。著作は他に『魔法がいっぱい!』 『サンタクロースの冒険』等がある。
