ドイツの画家。ライプツィヒの農家に生まれ、ワイマール、パリなどで、絵画を学ぶ。初期は印象派風に描いたが、第一次世界大戦の従軍体験を機に、表現主義的な画風を開拓。ナチスにより退廃芸術とされ、フランクフルト美術学校を追われて、オランダのアムステルダムへ移る。第二次大戦後は、アメリカへ移住し、ニューヨークにて没した。様々な状況下における人間のありようを寓意を込めて描き、また多くの自画像を残した。
