イギリスのSF作家。リバプールに生まれ、ケンブリッジ大学を卒業。サウザンプトン大学で工学の博士号を取得。学生時代から執筆を始め、短篇『ジーリー・フラワー』でデビュー。工学者としての知識やアイデアをベースとしたハードSF作家として注目を集める。『タイム・シップ』はウエルズの名作『タイム・マシン』刊行百周年を記念し、ウエルズの遺族の公認を受けた続篇として執筆された。著書は他に、『プランク・ゼロ』『時間的無限大』『虚空のリング』『フラックス』『天の筏』等がある。
