アイルランドの詩人、劇作家、政治家。客観性・具体性・知的内容にこだわらず、言葉による連想・隠喩・象徴等を利用して内面を表現せんとする「象徴主義」の詩人。アイルランド文芸劇場（後のアイルランド国民劇場協会）を設立、民話を収集紹介する等し文芸復興に貢献。活動家モード・ゴンの影響から民族運動・独立運動にも参加。また上院議員も務めている。「国民全体の精神を表現する高度に芸術的な形式をもったつねに驚異的なその詩のゆえに」ノーベル文学賞受賞。著作は『神秘の薔薇』『ケルト妖精物語』『ケルトの薄明』『対訳 イェイツ詩集』『赤毛のハンラハンと葦間の風』『ジョン・シャーマンとサーカスの動物たち』『自伝小説 まだらの鳥』等。
