ウィリアム・ヘイズリット

[1778.4.10 - 1830.9.18]

イギリスの批評家、随筆家。牧師の子で初めは聖職者、後に画家を志したが、詩人のコールリッジやワーズワースらとの交友により文学に転向。イギリスのロマン主義批評を代表する批評家の一人とされる。また種々の雑誌に多くの評論や随筆を寄稿し、批評・雑文によって生計を立てた同国最初の人物であるとも言われる。著書は『日時計』『ハズリット箴言集―人さまざま』『時代の精神―近代イギリス超人物批評』『シェークスピア劇の登場人物』等。
