ドイツの哲学者、音楽批評家。マルクス主義の理論を基盤としつつ、実践的で自己批判的に問題を分析し人々を解放せんとする、いわゆるフランクフルト学派の一員で、ホルクハイマー、ハーバーマスらとともに当該学派を代表する存在とされる。フランクフルト大学で哲学を修めた後、アルバン・ベルクに作曲を学び、音楽雑誌の編集に携わったが、『キルケゴール論』で教授資格を得て、同大学で教鞭を執る。ナチスの政権獲得後アメリカへ亡命するも、戦後すぐに帰国。その思想は、啓蒙が人々の解放としかしまた新たな抑圧を生むとする「啓蒙の弁証法」、権力者によって支配されたマスメディアや大衆文化が消費者を操作するとの主張を含む「文化産業」、絶対的真理や普遍的価値ではなく現実的な問題の解決を目指す「負の哲学」などの概念で知られ、また芸術を人々を解放すべきものとして措定したとされる。著書は、『ミニマ・モラリア』『否定弁証法』『プリズメン』『新音楽の哲学』『自律への教育』『新音楽の哲学』『三つのヘーゲル研究』『美の理論』『権威主義的パーソナリティ』等。
