ドイツの哲学者・文芸評論家。ベルリンにて、裕福なユダヤ系の実業家の家に生まれる。ヘブライ思想、ドイツ観念論、マルクス主義などに影響を受け、その繊細な感受性、精緻な文体、鋭い批評精神をもって書かれた数多くのエッセーで知られる。複製技術によって芸術作品から失われたものがあり、それが政治において戦争に利用されたとする「アウラ」に係る言説は有名。ナチスの迫害から逃れるためパリへ亡命していたが、パリ陥落を受けてアメリカへ渡ることを企てるもスペインへの入国を拒否され、大量のモルヒネを飲み自死したとされるが、詳細は不明。著書は、『複製技術時代の芸術』『ドイツ悲劇の根源』『子どものための文化史』『来たるべき哲学のプログラム』『ベンヤミン/アドルノ往復書簡』『ボードレール』『図説 写評の概念』『暴力批判論』『教育としての遊び』『この道、一方通行』『［新訳・評注］ 歴史の概念について』等。
