フランス象徴派の代表的詩人。パリに大蔵省官吏の子として生まれる。５歳で母を失い、祖父母に養育されるが、のちに孤児の境遇となる。ユーゴーらのロマン派の影響を受け、十代前半より詩作を始める。ボードレールやポーの影響を受けつつ、絶対の書物の創出を求めて生涯を掛け、ただ一冊の詩集を編み続けた。フーコー、デリダ、サルトルなど、後世へ大きな影響を与えている。著書には、『詩集』『骰子一擲』がある。
