ドイツの哲学者、社会学者。ベルリン大学で哲学、歴史、民族心理学等を学び、哲学博士となってベルリン大学の私講師を経た後に助教授となるが、ストラスブール大学教授となったのは晩年に至ってのことであり、理由はユダヤ人であることや教授であったディルタイとの確執によるものとされている。抽象的、観念的哲学や唯物論的立場を批判し、日常的な生に立脚した実践的な哲学である「生の哲学」をショーペンハウアーやニーチェなどから受け継ぎ、ベルクソン、ディルタイらと並び称される業績を残した。また、社会現象の構造や普遍性を追求せんとする「形式社会学」の創始者でもある。著書は『社会学 社会化の諸形式についての研究』『芸術哲学』『社会学の根本問題』『愛の断想、日々の断想』『橋と扉』『貨幣の哲学』『ショーペンハウアーとニーチェ』『社会的分化論―社会学的・心理学的研究』『宗教の社会学』『レンブラント』『文化の哲学』等。
