フランスの思想家。人性や道徳について思索し、随想・箴言などの形で書き記した、いわゆるモラリスト。『人間精神認識序説』に『箴言と省察』を付し刊行するも、翌年再版準備中に夭折。パスカルやラ・ロシュフーコーの影響が見られるが、独自の楽天主義的な立場から情念の価値を重んじ人間を肯定的に省察した。前記著書が『不遇なる一天才の手記』として翻訳されている。
