フランスの哲学者、教師、評論家。モラリスト。アランは筆名。スピノザ、デカルト、プラトンなどから多くを学び形作られた、人間理性を重んじる合理的ヒューマニズムの思想を展開。ベルクソン、ヴァレリーと並んで、20世紀前半におけるフランスの代表的知性の一人とされる。哲学のみならず道徳・芸術・教育・政治・経済などの諸分野において、プロポと呼ばれる短文の評論の形式を用いた数多くの作品を残した。新聞に連載されたプロポから編まれたその『幸福論』は、ヒルティ、ラッセルの著作とともに「三大幸福論」と呼ばれる。著作は他に、『人間論』『精神と情熱とに関する八十一章』『芸術論集』『イデー』『わが思索のあと』『教育論』『宗教論』『スピノザに倣いて』等。
